The daring diver utilizes a particular method to send the creature into a quiet, contemplative condition by massaging the ampullae of Lorenzini — the term given to hundreds of jelly-filled pores surrounding the creature’s snout and mouth. It causes sharks to go into a natural state of paralysis that can last up to 15 minutes.

‘In my regular work and dives with sharks, I am always removing their hooks,’ says the diver. Ms Zenato was cited as having said. ‘In this specific circumstance, it was more difficult than normal. I had to remove the shark from deep within after soaking it in tonic.’

Cristina has worked with sharks for over 20 years, and her abilities have been recognized by film and documentary producers all over the world, including the BBC and Nat Geo. On Grand Bahama Island, she manages the dive crew for the Underwater Explorers Society (UNEXSO).
