Hawks are incredible birds of prey, and when they target prey, they seldom miss. Have you ever seen a hawk attack an owl? Do you think a hawk can fend off birds while it’s trying to kill another one? If you want to see hawks as you have never seen them before, it’s time, so let’s get started.
Hawk Vs Blue Jay
After hearing, a horrid commotion coming from his bedroom window, the man recording this attack went outside to investigate to see what was making all the noise, and that’s when he saw a hawk killing a blue jay. A man was about to take a photo of a blue jay he spotted outside because he considers them to be pretty, but just when he was about to snap the picture, a hawk attacked the bird and killed it. I guess hawks also think blue jays are pretty…pretty tasty, that is.
It’s not always a happy time around a bird feeder. A man heard an unusual amount of chirping, in fact, a chorus of noisy chirping outside his backyard. He went to have a look and to his shock, a hawk had pinned down a blue jay just across his fence at the neighbor’s bird feeder. It looked like it was just sitting on top of the jay. He doesn’t know how it caught the jay and he did not see the hawk leave with the jay either. He just filmed this little bit for his wife to see. He felt so sorry for the jay, and he’s sure the surrounding jays felt helpless too.
Hawk Kills Woodpecker
A young teenager was walking to school and happened to see a hawk killing a woodpecker on
the way there. The woodpecker hung on for a long time, and even attempted to escape towards
the end of the clip, but to no avail. A man heard a commotion in his garden and saw that a sparrowhawk had caught a woodpecker that visited his bird feeder daily. It’s all part of nature, but he did feel sorry for the woodpecker because he had grown attached to the little birdy over time.
Hawk Vs Snake
Red-tailed Hawks often capture and feed on snakes (including rattlesnakes).
The Red-tail is one of the largest hawks, usually weighing between 2 and 4 pounds. As with most raptors, the female is nearly a third larger than the male and may have a wingspan of 56 inches. We have at least two pair nesting in SaddleBrooke this year and what a great benefit that is to our residents, their favorite food being small rodents such as rats and mice and the occasional snake.
This brings me to the story of the Hawk and the snake. As mentioned above red-tailed hawks often take rattlesnakes.
You may wonder how they can manage that without being bitten. The hawk approaches the snake using its wings as a shield, the rattler strikes at the feathers (which have no blood vessels to carry the venom), as the rattler is striking at the wings the hawk waits for an opportunity to make a fatal strike of its own to the back of the rattlers head. In addition the hawk can grab and hold the snake with its powerful talons.
